The author of nearly 200 scientific publications, a featured TEDx speaker, and President and Vice-Chancellor of Canada’s first independent, nonprofit, secular university, Dr. David Helfand, a first-time lecturer at the Jefferson, will deliver back-to-back presentations Monday, July 20 and Tuesday, July 21 on “The Universe: New Worlds,” describing how scientists are discovering new solar systems while establishing the existence of other habitable worlds, and “Questions Not Answers: A Process-based Curriculum in the Liberal Arts and Sciences,” which explores both the evolution and devolution of higher education in the 21st century.

A fellow at the Virginia Foundation for the Humanities, the International Center for Jefferson Studies, and the C.V. Starr Center for the Study of the American Experience at Washington College, author Henry Wiencek will lecture on the award-winning The Hairstons: An American Family in Black and White, which chronicles the story of the story of the black and white Hairston families, exemplifying the tangled history of race in America. Having spent nearly eight years researching and writing this griping tale, this saga spans more than two-hundred years of history.
